  •  socially through team building, creative exercises.

What will happen

The first half of the workshop:

  • The children will see a live 5 minute dance performance from Zara, incorporating Contemporary and Street dance styles.
  • The class will then be taken through a dance warm up to music and a series of movement games which start the blood flowing around the body and wake the active mind.
  • Specific exercises are then practised to build strength, balance and co-ordination and to prepare the body for the choreography to follow.  These are known as centre work.
  • Travelling exercises will be practised from one side of the room to the other.  These include kicks, walks, leaps, jumps, skips and turns.
  • The class will then co-operate to decide on a dance 'crew' or 'company' name and each design a sticky label with this company name.  They will all wear the stickers for the next part of the session.
  • A short 'routine' will then be taught, practised and performed to music, in their new 'crew'.

The second half of the workshop:

Games and tasks are carried out to develope their own material.  Using pictures of sports personal and prompt cards to help explain, the children will explore:

  • Freeze frames.
  • Dynamic and Rhythmic movement.
  • Individual creativity and group/unison work.

The chance to perform their work and give peer assessment will then take place.

In the final ten minutes, the class will follow a simple cool down and stretch and a discussion will be held about what they have learnt.
